Who or what is Mercia?

Mercia is a studio collaboration between music journalist / guitarist James McNair and film composer / multi-instrumentalist Daniel Teper.

What does the music sound like?

Mercia specialise in tender, sometimes exotic vignettes that deploy acoustic guitar, accordion, piano, strings, harmonica, glockenspiel and more. Live and programmed beats, percussion, and judicious electronica flourishes are also factored in.

Influences?

Come on down Yann Tiersen, Joni Mitchell, René Aubry, Nick Drake, Errol Garner, Ennio Morricone, Django Reinhardt and Francisco Tarrega. Oh, and budge up a bit for Larry David and his portly manager, Jeff.

What if I want to use some of Mercia’s astoundingly well-composed and meticulously arranged music in my television programme / high profile advertising campaign / multi-million dollar movie?

Mercia’s debut album Imagination (KPM629CD) can be accessed for direct media use via the KPM/EMI music library. Licensing information (i.e. how much does it cost!) can be found on the KPM front page, and tracks can be downloaded here...

Have others done so already?

Yes, lots. Including the folks who made the epic, much-acclaimed BBC2 documentary series, Coast.

Who does James write for?

He writes for Mojo and The Independent.

What might we find on Daniel’s CV?

Cheese (see his hugely successful album Cheesecore, KPM, 2001, excerpts of which have been used on Bo Selecta! and The Oprah Winfrey Show, to name but two outlets), a three year stint studying composition at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College Of Music, numerous film and advertisement credits.

What might we find on James’s CV?

A stint as a trainee baker, plus cover story interviews with Keith Richards, Sufjan Stevens, Bjork and the late James Brown.

Was that Daniel I saw playing and talking about accordions on the BBC1 programme Inside-Out late last year?

Yes it was!

Is this James McNair the same one who writes very successful cookery books such as James McNair Cooks Southeast Asian?

No, he is not.

How did Mercia get together?

James and Daniel met through mutual friend, Omar Karmi, also the inspiration, allegedly, for the celebrated Danny Fromajio composition “Bald, Fat & Happy”

Was Mercia always the shameless drive for hard cash it plainly is now?

No! Initially, James and Daniel would write and record music aboard the Don Bosco (Daniel’s erstwhile home / recording studio) for sheer pleasure, financial renumeration the furthest thing from their minds.
